Twitter annouces ‘unmention’ feature

Twitter announced on July, 11, 2022 that it’s rolling out its “Unmentioning” feature to all users on all devices. The new feature, which Twitter had initially began testing in April, allows users to remove themselves from conversations they don’t want to be a part of.

“Sometimes you want to see yourself out,” the social media giant said in a tweet. “Take control of your mentions and leave a conversation with Unmentioning, now rolling out to everyone on all devices.”

The update is the latest way Twitter has tried to give users more ways to control how people can interact with them, particularly at moments when they may be more susceptible to harassment.

All Twitter users can now select the three-dot menu next to a tweet to pull up a prompt offering to “get you out of this conversation.” The pop-up explains that leaving the conversation will untag you in the replies, although your username will still appear. When you unmention yourself from a tweet, your Twitter handle will turn gray, which will indicate to others that you’ve opted out of the conversation and can’t be tagged back into the thread. Unmentioning yourself also turns off notifications.

The official launch of the feature comes as the social network has been building out anti-abuse features into its platform. This is just one way that Twitter is trying to give users more ways to protect themselves from harassment. Last month, Twitter revealed that it had started testing a feature that prompted users to reconsider Tweet replies with harmful or abusive language. Twitter says that the users in the US who saw the prompt changed or deleted their replies over 30% of the time.

Of course, if these measures aren’t helping you with the abuse, you can always delete your account and go to Donald Trump’s social media platform.

“Twitter’s become very boring. They’ve gotten rid of a lot of good voices on Twitter, a lot of their conservative voices,” Trump said in an interview after saying he would not be going back on Twitter even if Elon Musk bought the company.

Twitter describes this “unmention” feature as the ability to leave an unwanted conversation on the platform. When used, it unlinks the user’s handle from the thread, so they will no longer be tagged in future tweets, and others won’t be able to reply to them from the same thread. However, it won’t prevent others from continuing to jump into the conversation, it will only shield the person’s replies and notifications.

The feature has been in the works for over a year now. Twitter first mentioned the idea last summer, saying it was meant to prevent the kind of “unwanted attention” that can often lead to harassment. It started testing it in April, but it was limited to a small group of users on the web only. Now, with the update, anyone will be able to remove themselves from a thread regardless of whether they are using Twitter’s apps or website.
